    • The Steadfast Heart, Available Now!

Posted at 5:00 pm by arlemhawks, on February 27, 2019

I’m excited to announce that my first novella, and first published work, is available now on Amazon (ebook for 99 cents for a limited time) and Kindle Unlimited! A paperback copy is also available through Amazon, if that’s more your thing. 😉

      cover

A broken sailor looking for a purpose, a jilted lady longing for the past, and a chance at happiness neither expected.

After losing his foot in battle, Lieutenant Robert Brenton can’t find his place in the navy or society, where he fears he is seen only as a cripple. He retires to his small estate to find peace, not anticipating the distraction awaiting him.

Holly Addison has the world at her feet, until her prized beau cancels their engagement and ruins her reputation. Banished to Cornwall, she finds herself a guest in Robert’s run-down manor by the sea. She writes repeatedly to her former love, trying to persuade him to take her back to society. But Robert’s charm and simple life make her consider what she really wants—a life of excess, or a life of meaning.

As time runs out on their chance to be together, both are forced to examine their hearts and uncover a strength neither knew they had.

This book has been so fun to research and write. It’s also been very fun to work on a writing project with such good friends and talented writers.

The Steadfast Heart launches at a strange time for my family. We’re greeting the fulfillment of a dream while also saying goodbye to someone very dear.

This little book has been with me through increasingly hard days. It’s brought connections and tender moments that my family and I will treasure forever. And it has reminded my that despite the bitter pounding of the thunderstorms of life, we can rise stronger than before. There is light after the storm. I have been so blessed with people in my life who wouldn’t leave me alone to suffer, but who picked me up and practically carried me forward.

Thanks to all the people who have helped and encouraged me through this process.

    • Part 1 is done (now come questions)

Posted at 10:43 pm by arlemhawks, on January 20, 2018

It seemed to take all week, but I finally finished Part 1 of my Regency romance. I’m pretty excited about it. The female main character’s life is kind of in shambles right now, despite some good news she received. One male lead ran away from everything, and the other got shot down and needs to figure out what to do. I might need to add a scene or two, but for now I think I’ll leave it where it is and advance to the Part 2.

But finishing it brought on some interesting questions. The first part is almost 64,000 words long… And I feel like I don’t have a ton of stuff to cut. Maybe words, but I at least don’t have many scenes to cut, because I try really hard to not have fluff or filler scenes. (Which is actually hard when writing romance, I’ve decided. The flirting scenes tend to feel a little fluffy.) Romance books tend to be around 70,000 words on the short end… Which means half of my book is almost as long as a full novel. Oops.
